About Jonathan David Helser
Jonathan David Helser is a contemporary American worship leader, songwriter, and artist known for his raw, emotive musical style and his focus on the "theology of the heart." Alongside his wife, Melissa Helser, he has become a leading voice in the modern worship movement, particularly through their long-standing partnership with Bethel Music. Based in Sophia, North Carolina, the Helsers’ work is deeply rooted in their local community and their ministry at A Place for the Heart, a retreat center founded by Jonathan’s parents, Ken and Linda Helser.
The Helsers' ministry is characterized by a "holistic" approach to creativity and faith. They are the founders of the 18 Inch Journey, a 60-day intensive school for young adults named after the metaphorical distance between the head and the heart. This school emphasizes identity, emotional health, and creative expression as forms of worship. This community-centric focus birthed Cageless Birds, a collective of artists and musicians who produce music, books, and art that move beyond traditional congregational song structures into more spontaneous and "prophetic" territories.
Jonathan’s songwriting often centers on themes of sonship, divine love, and the overcoming power of praise. His songs are frequently used in both personal devotion and global congregational settings, marked by a blend of folk-influenced acoustic sounds and powerful, anthemic builds.
