About L. E. C. Joers
Lawrence Eugene Claire Joers (1900–1999)
Lawrence Eugene Claire Joers, commonly cited as L. E. C. Joers, was an American Christian hymn writer whose work contributed to Sabbath worship music and devotional hymnody in the twentieth century. Though detailed biographical information about his life remains limited, his hymns continue to appear in denominational hymnals and multilingual worship collections.
He was born in 1900 and died in 1999. His known hymn contributions reflect a strong emphasis on reverence, worship, and the biblical significance of the Sabbath day.
Joers is best remembered for the hymn:
“Holy Sabbath, Day of Rest, By Our Master Richly Blest”
This hymn celebrates the Sabbath as a sacred gift established by God for rest, worship, and spiritual renewal. The text reflects themes drawn from Genesis 2:2–3 and the Fourth Commandment in Exodus 20:8–11, emphasizing the holiness and blessing of the day set apart by God.
The hymn also gained wider reach through translations into other languages, including:
- “Santo día que el Señor” in Spanish
- “Santo dia, que o Senhor Lá no Éden ordenou” in Portuguese
These translations demonstrate the hymn’s use among international Christian congregations and its continuing role in worship beyond English-speaking churches.
Although little public information survives regarding Joers’ personal ministry or career, his hymn writing reveals a devotion to biblical worship and congregational praise. His contribution stands as an example of how even a small body of hymnic work can continue to serve the Church across languages and generations.
