About Martin Nystrom

Marty Nystrom is a prolific American songwriter and worship leader who became a central figure in the Praise and Worship movement of the 1980s and 90s. Born in Seattle in 1956, he was raised with a diverse denominational background, influenced by both the Christian Reformed and Evangelical Covenant traditions. After earning a degree in music education from Oral Roberts University, Nystrom moved into full-time ministry, serving as a music director for Christ for the Nations in New York before becoming a mainstay at Integrity Music.

During his tenure with Integrity Music, Nystrom served as a song development manager and was a prominent face of the "Hosanna! Music" series. He wrote more than seventy songs and led worship on several of the series' most popular recordings. His style is characterized by lyrical simplicity, a strong focus on personal devotion, and melodies that are easily accessible for congregational singing.

"As the Deer"

Nystrom is most famous for the 1981 classic "As the Deer," a song that has become one of the most recognizable worship choruses in modern Christianity. He wrote the song during a period of fasting and spiritual seeking while at a summer session at Christ for the Nations Institute. Based on Psalm 42:1, the lyrics—"As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee"—capture a deep, singular focus on intimacy with God. The song’s universal appeal is evidenced by its translation into dozens of languages, including Spanish ("Como el ciervo"), Lithuanian ("Kaip elnė geidžia"), and many others.

Other Significant Contributions

While "As the Deer" remains his signature work, Nystrom authored several other staples of contemporary liturgy that emphasize surrender and the character of God:

  • "Shepherd of My Soul": A reflective prayer for divine guidance and control over one's life.

  • "Come to the Table of Mercy": A poignant communion hymn that focuses on God's invitation to the broken.

  • "I Will Come and Bow Down": A straightforward anthem of adoration and physical posture in worship.

  • "A Broken Spirit and a Contrite Heart": Drawing from the Psalms, this song emphasizes the humility required to enter God's presence.

Legacy and Continued Ministry

Nystrom’s influence extends beyond his catalog of songs through his work as a mentor and conference speaker. He has traveled globally to teach on the theology and practice of worship, helping to train a new generation of musicians. His work bridges the gap between the traditional hymnody of his youth and the modern worship style, often incorporating scriptural paraphrases that make the biblical text feel personal and immediate. Today, he remains a respected voice in the global church, with his songs continuing to be featured in major hymnals and digital worship platforms alike.
