About Richard Blanchard

Richard E. Blanchard (1925–2004) was a prominent American Methodist minister, author, and songwriter whose career spanned four decades of pastoral service. Blessed with an intensely curious mind and a vibrant array of personal hobbies, Blanchard traveled the world and wrote across multiple genres.

Yet, within global Christian hymnody, his legacy is firmly anchored by a single, universally recognized gospel chorus born out of a moment of pastoral frustration and profound spiritual inspiration: "Fill My Cup, Lord."

Global Beginnings and Pastoral Footprints

Blanchard was born in Chungking (now Chongqing), China, to American Methodist missionary parents. His family returned to the United States during his childhood, living across Indiana and North Carolina. Even as a teenager, Blanchard showed a sharp knack for financial foresight; while working at a bank during his senior year of high school, he saved his earnings to buy war bonds, eventually leveraging them to purchase a lifelong piece of lakefront property on Lake Conway in Florida.

After a brief stint at Davidson College and a medical discharge from the U.S. Navy during World War II, Blanchard finished his studies at Mercer University and earned his Bachelor of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

Ordained as an elder in the Methodist Church, he spent 40 years leading congregations through major shifts across the Florida circuit, serving in:

  • Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa

  • Jacksonville, Holiday, and Orlando (where he retired in 1988)

The Story Behind "Fill My Cup, Lord" (1959)

In 1953, Blanchard was assigned to a Methodist church in Miami, Florida. During this season, a young couple approached him asking for marital counseling. Blanchard agreed, scheduling an intensive series of sessions to help them navigate their difficulties.

On the day of a critical appointment, Blanchard sat waiting in his church office. The clock ticked past the scheduled time—thirty minutes, then forty-five, then an hour. The couple had completely stood him up.

Feeling a wave of intense pastoral frustration and administrative exhaustion, Blanchard decided to clear his head. He walked down the hallway to the church's recreation room, sat down at the piano, and began to play idle chords to calm his nerves. In less than thirty minutes, the melody and lyrics of a brand-new song completely flooded his mind, directly drawing from Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4:

"Like the woman at the well I was seeking For things that could not satisfy; And then I heard my Savior speaking: 'Draw from My well that never shall run dry.'

Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord! Come and quench this thirsting of my soul; Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more— Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!"

What began as an exhausting afternoon of waiting turned into an international phenomenon. The gospel chorus was published, recorded by dozens of prominent artists, and translated globally into dozens of languages, including widespread use across Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese hymnals.

A Renaissance Man of Hobbies

Blanchard was a true polymath with a deep love for culture, art, and mental puzzles. Beyond his standard pastoral duties, he lived an incredibly active, multifaceted life:

  • The Musician & Dramatist: An accomplished brass musician, Blanchard played the trombone throughout his life. In the 1980s, he fused his musical talents with his love for church history to write a full-stage musical titled Francis of Assisi.

  • The Writer: He wrote a regular weekly column, "Between You and Me," for the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, published a beloved children's story called "The Little Star" in Ideals magazine, and penned the official biography of Methodist Bishop John Branscomb.

  • The Adventurer: An avid boater who loved dining directly by the water, Blanchard was a passionate global traveler, ultimately exploring 75 different countries over his lifetime. When not traveling, he collected stamps and coins, followed sports closely, and avidly played complex word games.

In his final years, Richard and his wife, Anne, moved to Swannanoa, North Carolina, to rest near their three children, where he passed away in 2004.
