About Walter Farquharson

The Reverend Dr. Walter Henry Farquharson (born May 30, 1936) is an eminent Canadian hymn writer, pastor, and educator who served as the 33rd Moderator of the United Church of Canada. Born in the prairie town of Zealandia, near Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Farquharson was raised on a family seed farm, an environment that deeply instilled in him a lifelong theology of environmental stewardship and creation care. Combining a sharp literary mind with an approachable, community-centered approach to ministry, he became one of Canada’s most prolific and globally recognized contemporary hymn writers, known for connecting traditional faith with the social and environmental challenges of the modern world.

The Tentmaker Ministry of Saltcoats

Walter Farquharson completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. He pursued his theological training at St. Andrew's College in Saskatoon, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity and was ordained into the ministry of the United Church of Canada in 1960. Following ordination, he traveled to Scotland for a year of postgraduate research at New College, Edinburgh, while concurrently serving as an assistant minister at Morningside Parish Church.

Upon his return to Canada in 1961, Farquharson accepted a call to the Saltcoats-Bredenbury Pastoral Charge in Saskatchewan. He embarked on a remarkable, decades-long "tentmaker" ministry, serving as the local parish minister while simultaneously working as a secular high school teacher, instructing local youth in English and Social Studies. Believing that pastoral ministry should encompass the entirety of community life, he shared his pulpit from time to time with other clergy, including the Reverend Margaret Joyce Dickin. His outstanding service to church and academy was recognized in 1975 when St. Andrew's College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity.

National Leadership and the Moderatorship

Farquharson’s deep pastoral integrity and structural vision led to his steady elevation within the national denomination. In August 1990, during the 33rd General Council in London, Ontario, he was elected as the Moderator of the United Church of Canada.

Serving a two-year term from 1990 to 1992, he occupied the highest elected position in the denomination, acting as its chief pastor, spiritual guide, and public voice. During his tenure, he navigated complex national conversations on social justice, ecclesiastical inclusion, and the church's changing role in Canadian society, constantly emphasizing a message of grassroots community and global reconciliation.

Hymnological Impact and the Klusmeier Collaboration

As a hymn writer, Farquharson has penned more than eighty hymns and sacred songs that have dramatically shaped the landscape of modern Canadian worship. His texts are widely celebrated for their ability to allow contemporary congregations to sing their faith while actively confronting real-world issues. Critics have noted that his verses consistently breathe the spirit of Scripture while speaking directly to the modern conscience.

The defining musical partnership of Farquharson's hymnological career has been his extensive collaboration with the renowned composer Ron Klusmeier. Together, they published the highly influential song collection Worship the Lord (1977), alongside Fred Kaan. Their collaborative pieces have crossed global denominational lines, finding placement in The Hymn Book (1971), Songs for a Gospel People (1987), and Voices United (1996), which features thirteen of Farquharson's texts.

Landmark Masterpieces and Theological Themes

Farquharson’s hymns cover a wide spectrum of themes, ranging from structural societal critique to the quiet contemplation of nature.

Earthly Stewardship and Global Reconciliation

His widely known stewardship hymn, "For Beauty of Meadows" (1982), relies on his childhood agricultural roots, framing humanity not as the consumers of the earth, but as "gardeners in peace" who hold nature on a temporary lease from the Creator. Set to music by Jane Marshall, it remains a standard creation-care anthem across North America.

On an international scale, his collaboration with Klusmeier, "Walls That Divide" (also known in hymnals as "Though ancient walls may still stand proud"), has become a global corporate anthem. The text addresses the systemic structural and cultural barriers that separate humanity, offering Christ as the ultimate force for tearing down historical animosities.

Hymn Excerpt: The Call to Ecumenical Renewal

Teach us once again to be gardeners in peace;

All nature around us is ours but on lease;

Your name we would hallow in all that we do,

Fulfilling our calling, creating with You.

His unique legacy represents a perfect marriage of regional devotion and national influence. By spending his life pastoring a single prairie community while simultaneously writing lines that challenge the global church to tear down its dividing walls, the schoolteacher-priest from Saskatchewan has ensured that generations of believers can sing a faith that is both deeply rooted in the soil and wide open to the world.
