Biography:
William James Kirkpatrick was an American composer, editor, and compiler of gospel music. He was born on February 27, 1838, in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and died on September 20, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his early musical instruction from his father and later continued his studies with private teachers.
Kirkpatrick initially worked as a carpenter and was engaged in the furniture business from 1862 to 1878. During this period, he was also active in church music. In 1878 he left the furniture trade to devote himself entirely to music ministry and publishing. He served as music director at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, where he led congregational singing and developed choirs.
He was a prolific compiler and editor of gospel songbooks, producing approximately one hundred collections during his lifetime. His first published collection, Devotional Melodies (1859), appeared when he was twenty-one years old. Many of his later collections were issued by the John Hood Company and subsequently by his own Praise Publishing Company, both based in Philadelphia.
Kirkpatrick collaborated with numerous hymn writers, including Fanny J. Crosby and others associated with the late nineteenth-century gospel song movement. He composed music for many widely used hymn texts and contributed significantly to the development and spread of American gospel song repertory in Methodist and other Protestant churches.
His work influenced congregational singing in the United States and abroad, and many of his tunes remained in circulation in twentieth-century hymnals.
