Brightness of eternal glory
By Robert Robinson
Lyrics
Shall Thy praise unuttered lie?
Fly, my tongue, such guilty silence,
Sing the Lord who came to die.
Did the shepherds learn their lays?
Shame would cover me ungrateful,
Should my tongue refuse to praise.
To the cross of deepest woe--
All to ransom guilty captives;
Flow, my praise, for ever flow.
Leave Thy footstool, take Thy throne;
Thence return and reign for ever;
Be the Kingdom all Thine own.

About This Hymn
“Brightness of Eternal Glory” is a hymn attributed to Robert Robinson, best remembered as the author of “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” Written in the latter half of the 18th century, this text reflects Robinson’s deep reverence for the majesty and deity of Christ. The title draws from Hebrews 1:3, where Christ is described as “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person.”
This hymn exalts Jesus as the eternal radiance of God, the one through whom divine glory is revealed to mankind. Robinson’s words focus on Christ’s unique role as both Savior and the visible manifestation of the invisible God. He captures the wonder of Christ’s nature: fully divine, yet condescending in love to redeem humanity. The language is rich with awe, calling believers to worship the Lord who is clothed with unapproachable light and majesty, yet approachable through grace.
Robinson, who had a complex spiritual journey, wrote with a sincerity that reveals both a knowledge of theological truth and a heart that longed for the nearness of God. In this hymn, the singer is lifted beyond earthly distractions into contemplation of the eternal Son, the one who is the “Brightness of Eternal Glory.”
The hymn is also deeply devotional, reminding worshippers that Christ is not only the cosmic radiance of the Father’s glory but also the source of light and life for each believer. It encourages hearts to rest in the Savior who is exalted above all creation, and to look forward with anticipation to the day when faith will give way to sight.
Though not as widely sung as Robinson’s other hymns, “Brightness of Eternal Glory” remains a profound piece of devotional poetry that reflects his theological depth and his enduring desire to magnify Christ. It continues to point the church to the majesty and deity of Jesus, the eternal Son of God, in whom the fullness of divine glory shines forever.
