Come, Ye Thankful People, Come
By Henry Alford
Lyrics
raise the song of harvest home;
all is safely gathered in,
ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide
for our wants to be supplied;
come to God's own temple, come,
raise the song of harvest home.
fruit as praise to God we yield;
wheat and tares together sown
are to joy or sorrow grown;
first the blade and then the ear,
then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we
wholesome grain and pure may be.
and shall take the harvest home;
from the field shall in that day
all offenses purge away,
giving angels charge at last
in the fire the tares to cast;
but the fruitful ears to store
in the garner evermore.
bring thy final harvest home;
gather thou thy people in,
free from sorrow, free from sin,
there, forever purified,
in thy presence to abide;
come, with all thine angels, come,
raise the glorious harvest home.

About This Hymn
"Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is a classic harvest and thanksgiving hymn written by English clergyman Henry Alford in 1844. Originally intended for a village harvest festival, the hymn blends gratitude for God’s material provision with a deeper spiritual message about the final harvest of souls at the end of the age.
The first verse is a call to gather in praise for the blessings of the harvest, reflecting Psalm 100:4 and other biblical imagery of God’s provision. The subsequent verses move toward eschatological themes, drawing from passages like Matthew 13:39–43, where Christ speaks of the final gathering of His people.
The hymn is often sung to the tune St. George’s Windsor by George J. Elvey, whose stately and majestic melody matches the dignity of the text. While popular in North America for Thanksgiving services, it is also used in the United Kingdom during Harvest Festival celebrations, as well as in liturgical contexts marking the end of the church year.
