God Hath Spoken by the Prophets
By G. W. Briggs
Lyrics
spoken his unchanging Word,
each from age to age proclaiming
God, the one, the righteous Lord.
In the world's despair and turmoil
one firm anchor holds us fast:
God is King, his throne eternal,
God the first and God the last.
Christ, the everlasting Son,
brightness of the Father's glory,
with the Father ever one;
spoken by the Word incarnate,
God from God, before time was;
Light from Light, to earth descending,
he reveals our God to us.
speaking to our hearts again,
in the ageless Word declaring
his own message, now as then.
Thro' the rise and fall of nations
one sure faith is standing fast:
God abides, his Word unchanging,
God the first and God the last.

About This Hymn
“God Hath Spoken by the Prophets” was written in 1952 by George Wallace Briggs, an Anglican priest known for his strong emphasis on the authority of Scripture and the centrality of Christ. This hymn traces the unfolding revelation of God from the Old Testament prophets to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
The opening line reflects Hebrews 1:1-2, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son.” Briggs captures this movement from promise to fulfillment. God did not remain silent. He revealed His will through chosen servants, and ultimately through His Son.
The hymn emphasizes that divine revelation is purposeful and redemptive. The prophets were not merely moral teachers or social reformers. According to Amos 3:7, “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” Their message prepared the way for Christ, pointing forward to the coming Messiah who would complete the law and the prophets, as stated in Matthew 5:17.
A central theme of the hymn is continuity. The God who spoke through Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the other prophets is the same God revealed in Jesus Christ. John 1:14 declares, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” The hymn underscores that Christ is not a contradiction of earlier revelation but its fulfillment and embodiment.
Briggs also brings the message into the present. God’s Word is not confined to ancient history. The same Word continues to instruct, convict, and guide believers today. This reflects 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which teaches that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness.
Musically, the hymn is often paired with strong, dignified tunes that reflect its theological depth. It is frequently sung in services that emphasize Scripture, preaching, or the unity of the Old and New Testaments.
“God Hath Spoken by the Prophets” reminds the church that Christianity is rooted in divine revelation. God has spoken clearly, progressively, and ultimately through His Son. The hymn calls believers to listen carefully, trust fully, and live obediently in response to the revealed Word of God.
