Hail To The Lord’s Anointed
Lyrics
great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth.
Before him on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever;
that name to us is love.

About This Hymn
“Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” is one of James Montgomery’s most enduring hymns. It was composed as a paraphrase of Psalm 72, which speaks of the reign of a just and compassionate king. In the hymn, Montgomery greets Christ as the promised King who comes in appointed time to break oppression, free captives, help the weak, and usher in righteousness.
Montgomery was deeply engaged with social issues abolition of slavery, the plight of the poor, and justice and many of those convictions find voice in this hymn. It not only celebrates Christ’s kingship, but also His mission to rescue, uplift, and restore.
Over the years, the hymn has been used especially during the seasons of Advent and Epiphany, when Christians anticipate and celebrate Christ’s coming reign. Many hymnals include it under those themes. Its meter is 76.76.D, and it is often sung to hymn tunes such as Crüger or Monk.
