O God, Creation's Secret Force

By St. Ambrose

Lyrics

1. O God, creation’s secret force,
Yourself unmoved, all motion’s source,
You, from the morn till evening's ray,
Through all its changes guide the day:
2. Grant us, when this short life is past,
The glorious evening that shall last;
That, by a holy death attained,
Eternal glory may be gained.
3. Almighty Father, hear our cry
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord Most High,
Whom with the Spirit we adore
For ever and for evermore.

About This Hymn

“O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf,” translated as “O God, Creation’s Secret Force,” is an Advent hymn that expresses a deep longing for God to come down and bring salvation. Though sometimes associated with early church tradition linked to Ambrose of Milan, the hymn as commonly known comes through later German sources and has been rendered into English by John Mason Neale and others. It reflects the yearning of God’s people for deliverance and the fulfillment of divine promises.

The hymn draws strongly from Isaiah 64:1, “Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down” (KJV). This cry forms the heart of the text, expressing a longing for God’s direct intervention in a world marked by sin and brokenness. The language is urgent and expectant, capturing the hope of the Old Testament saints as they awaited the coming of the Messiah.

Isaiah 45:8 also shapes the imagery of the hymn, calling for the heavens to drop righteousness and the earth to open and bring forth salvation. The hymn reflects this prophetic vision, portraying salvation as something that comes from above by God’s initiative rather than human effort.

Psalm 80:1-3 contains a repeated plea for God to restore His people and cause His face to shine upon them. This theme of restoration is echoed throughout the hymn, which calls on God to rescue His people and renew them through His presence.

Luke 1:68-79 celebrates the coming of Christ as the fulfillment of these longings. Zechariah’s prophecy speaks of God visiting and redeeming His people, giving light to those in darkness. The hymn aligns with this fulfillment, looking both backward to the promises and forward to their realization in Christ.

The tune, a traditional German melody, supports the hymn’s earnest and pleading tone. It enhances the sense of longing and hope that defines the text.

“O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf” is especially used during Advent, a season that reflects both the first coming of Christ and the anticipation of His return. Through its rich biblical imagery and heartfelt petitions, the hymn invites believers to join in the ancient cry for God to come, trusting that He alone brings true salvation and restoration.
