This day, at Thy creating word

By William Walsham How

Lyrics

1. This day at thy creating word
first o'er the earth the light was poured:
O Lord, this day upon us shine
and fill our souls with light divine.
2. This day the Lord for sinners slain
in might victorious rose again:
O Jesus, may we raised be
from death of sin to life in thee!
3. This day the Holy Spirit came
with fiery tongues of cloven flame:
O Spirit, fill our hearts this day
with grace to hear and grace to pray.
4. O day of light and life and grace,
from earthly toil sweet resting place,
thy hallowed hours, blest gift of love,
give we again to God above.
5. All praise to God the Father be,
all praise, eternal Son, to thee,
whom, with the Spirit, we adore
forever and forevermore.

About This Hymn

“This Day, at Thy Creating Word” is a morning hymn by William Walsham How, a nineteenth century English bishop known for his pastoral sensitivity and clear devotional writing. The hymn is intended for the beginning of the day, calling believers to recognize God as the Creator of light and the giver of each new day, and to dedicate their lives afresh to His service.

The opening line reflects Genesis 1:3-5, where God’s creative word brings light out of darkness. By connecting the dawn of each day with the original act of creation, the hymn reminds worshippers that every morning is a renewal of God’s sustaining power. Each new day is not accidental but a gift shaped by the same divine authority that formed the world.

Psalm 118:24 declares, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (KJV). The hymn echoes this joyful recognition, encouraging believers to greet the day with gratitude and praise. The proper response to God’s gift of a new day is not indifference but rejoicing and thanksgiving.

Lamentations 3:22-23 emphasizes that God’s mercies are new every morning. This truth deepens the meaning of the hymn, reminding believers that each day brings fresh grace. No matter what has passed before, God’s compassion and faithfulness remain constant, offering renewal and hope.

Matthew 6:11, “Give us this day our daily bread,” reflects the believer’s dependence on God for daily provision. The hymn aligns with this teaching by expressing trust in God not only as Creator but also as Sustainer. Each day is lived under His care, and all needs are supplied by His hand.

“This Day, at Thy Creating Word” is a gentle yet profound hymn that encourages daily devotion. It calls believers to begin each day with a conscious awareness of God’s presence and a renewed commitment to live for His glory. Through its scriptural foundation and peaceful tone, the hymn teaches that every new morning is an opportunity to walk with God, sustained by His mercy and guided by His light.
