Rise up, O men of God!
By William Pierson Merrill
Lyrics
Have done with lesser things;
give heart and soul and mind and strength
to serve the King of kings.
His kingdom tarries long;
bring in the day of brotherhood
and end the night of wrong.
The church for you doth wait.
Her strength unequal to her task;
rise up, and make her great!
Tread where His feet have trod;
as brothers of the Son of Man,
rise up, O men of God.

About This Hymn
“Rise Up, O Men of God!” was written by William Pierson Merrill in 1911 as a call to Christian service and consecration. The hymn urges believers to lift high their faith, abandon complacency, and labor together for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom. Merrill, a Presbyterian pastor and theologian, sought to inspire men in particular to dedicate themselves wholly to the work of God at a time when the church needed strong leadership and devotion.
The words echo Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 16:13, “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong,” and the determination of Nehemiah’s builders who declared, “Let us rise up and build” (Nehemiah 2:18). The hymn is not only about spiritual courage, but also about wholehearted service, reminding Christians that the church and the world need men and women who will rise above mediocrity and live boldly for Christ.
Its stanzas emphasize themes of faithfulness, unity, and the pursuit of truth. Believers are called to bring the church into fuller obedience and to devote their lives to Christ, who is the Head of the church. The hymn ends with a triumphant vision: the people of God, risen and strong, bringing in the day of Christ’s glory.
Set to the tune St. Thomas (an earlier tune attributed to Aaron Williams, later arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams and others), the hymn became a rallying song for Christian men’s movements in the early twentieth century and continues to be sung in churches today. It has been used both as a hymn of dedication and as a charge to Christian service, reminding every generation that the call to rise up and serve the Lord is ever urgent.
