Safe in the Arms of Jesus
By Fanny Crosby
Lyrics
safe on His gentle breast,
there by His love o’ershaded,
sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! ’tis the voice of angels,
borne in a song to me,
over the fields of glory,
over the jasper sea.
Safe in the arms of Jesus,
safe on His gentle breast,
there by His love o’ershaded,
sweetly my soul shall rest.
safe from corroding care,
safe from the world’s temptations,
sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow,
free from my doubts and fears;
only a few more trials,
only a few more tears!
Jesus has died for me;
firm on the Rock of Ages,
ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait in patience,
wait till the night is o’er;
wait till I see the morning
break on the golden shore.

About This Hymn
Safe in the Arms of Jesus is one of the most beloved and tender hymns written by Fanny J. Crosby, the prolific blind hymn writer of the 19th century. Penned in 1868, the hymn beautifully expresses the calm assurance and peace that comes from resting in the loving care of Christ. It offers deep comfort to those experiencing grief, loss, or fear, reminding them that the safest place to be is in the arms of the Savior.
The hymn was written shortly after the death of a young child, and composer William H. Doane, moved by the sorrow, approached Crosby and asked her to write words of comfort. In just a short time, she dictated the poem that became Safe in the Arms of Jesus. Doane immediately set it to music. The hymn was first sung at a funeral and soon spread across denominations as a favorite song of consolation, especially at memorials and bedsides. The deep spiritual truth of God's comforting presence underlies each line of the text.
The first stanza sets the tone of peace and safety: “Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast.” This image of being embraced and protected by Christ echoes biblical promises of divine shelter. Crosby portrays the Savior not as distant or stern, but as tender and near, providing rest and security to the weary. The refrain of being “safe from corroding care” and “safe from the world’s temptations” adds a sense of spiritual refuge from sin and sorrow.
The second stanza shifts into a tone of surrender and trust. The soul looks to Jesus with childlike confidence, turning away from worldly trouble to receive comfort from the “Only Refuge.” The words “Jesus, my heart’s dear Refuge” reflect Crosby’s personal faith and intimate walk with the Lord. Though she was blind, her spiritual sight was vivid. The verse ends with a prayer for rest and stillness in the presence of the One who calms every storm.
The final stanza looks forward to eternity. There is hope beyond the grave—Jesus is not only the Comforter in life but the Redeemer who will receive His own into glory. Crosby writes of angels bearing the soul home, a picture full of heavenly peace. Though simple in language, the hymn communicates profound truth: the Christian need not fear death, for Christ has secured eternal rest.
Safe in the Arms of Jesus has brought comfort to generations of believers. It continues to be sung at funerals, hospitals, and times of mourning, offering a gentle reminder that in Jesus there is perfect safety. Fanny Crosby’s hymn endures because it speaks not just to the intellect but to the heart, pointing to the One who gives rest to every weary soul.
