Since Jesus Came Into My Heart
Lyrics
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I have sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart.
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins which were many are all washed away,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond I can see,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And I'm happy, so happy, as onward I go,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

About This Hymn
This joyful hymn was written by Rufus H. McDaniel, a pastor and hymnwriter, in 1914. McDaniel composed the lyrics during a time of deep personal sorrow. His son had recently died, and in the midst of that pain, McDaniel wanted to affirm the hope and transformation that come through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
In response to this desire, he penned the now-famous words that begin:
“What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought, since Jesus came into my heart!”
The hymn reflects a believer's testimony of the inward change and outward joy brought by salvation. The lyrics speak of peace, joy, light, and hope that replace sorrow, darkness, and sin—hallmarks of a heart truly transformed by Christ.
Charles H. Gabriel, one of the most prolific gospel songwriters of the era, composed the music. His uplifting, melodic tune perfectly matches the exuberant message of the text, making the hymn a favorite in revival meetings and church services.
