Harper G. Smyth

Harper Garcia Smyth (1873–1945) was a prominent American evangelistic singer, composer, and song leader during the golden age of the gospel hymn movement. Though personal biographical records are sparse, his professional legacy is deeply intertwined with the urban revival circuits of the early 20th century. He was a frequent collaborator with major evangelists of his day, providing the musical backdrop for large scale revival meetings where he served as a soloist and choral conductor. His work was characterized by a focus on practical Christian living and the personal experience of grace.

Smyth’s most enduring contribution to global hymnody is the widely beloved hymn "Is your life a channel of blessing," which he both wrote and composed in 1903. The song, which emphasizes the believer's role as a conduit for divine grace rather than a mere reservoir, appeared in over 112 different hymnals and became a staple of missionary and devotional services.
