About H.C.A. Gaunt

Howard Charles Adie Gaunt (1902–1983) was a distinguished British educator, clergyman, and hymn writer who made significant contributions to 20th century liturgical music. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, he dedicated much of his professional life to the English public school system. He served as the Headmaster of Malvern College from 1937 to 1953 and later became a Canon of Winchester Cathedral. His dual background in education and the priesthood allowed him to write hymns that were particularly suited for school assemblies and cathedral worship, balancing intellectual depth with accessible language.

Gaunt’s hymnody is characterized by its rhythmic vitality and its focus on the active presence of Christ in modern life. He is perhaps best known for the hymn "Praise the Lord, rise up rejoicing," which was originally written for the choir of Winchester Cathedral. The text is celebrated for its themes of community and spiritual renewal, often paired with energetic tunes that reflect its call to action. Another widely used text, "Come, Lord, to our souls come down," appears in over a dozen different hymnals and demonstrates his skill in crafting prayers for divine presence that are both personal and congregational.

Throughout his career, Gaunt sought to revitalize the "service of song" by providing new texts that spoke to contemporary sensibilities while remaining firmly rooted in the Anglican tradition. His hymns, such as "Glory to thee, O God, for all thy saints in light" and "Lord Jesus, once you spoke to men," continue to be featured in major British and American hymnals. By combining his pastoral experience with a keen poetic sense, Gaunt provided the 20th century church with a body of work that celebrates the continuity of faith and the ongoing revelation of the divine word.
