About Howard J. Conover

Howard John Conover (1850–1922) was a dedicated Methodist Episcopal minister whose life and work were rooted in the spiritual landscape of New Jersey. Born in Woodstone, he was part of a generation of ministers who received a rigorous classical and theological education, attending Pennington Seminary and later Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. Ordained in 1874, Conover spent nearly five decades in active ministry, serving various congregations across the New Jersey Conference during a period of significant growth for the Methodist church.

In his later years, Conover sought to formalize his creative interests by joining the Hymn Writers’ and Composers’ Society in New York City. This organization served as a professional hub for authors and musicians during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, facilitating the publication and distribution of new sacred music. While many of his peers from this society were prolific producers of "gospel songs" for revival meetings, Conover's primary contribution to the hymnal is a text of broad, intercessory scope.

His most recognized hymn, "O God, we pray for all mankind," reflects the global-mindedness that began to characterize American Protestantism at the turn of the century. Rather than focusing solely on individual salvation, the hymn is a prayer for the universal human family, asking for divine guidance, peace, and the spread of truth across all nations. Its placement in several denominational hymnals suggests it was particularly valued for its use in special services focused on social concerns or world missions.

Conover passed away in 1922 in Elmer, New Jersey, and was buried in Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Though his published output was modest compared to some of his contemporaries, his involvement in the professional circles of New York’s hymn writers underscores the era's commitment to crafting high-quality worship materials. He is remembered as a faithful "pastor-poet" who looked beyond his local parish to pray for the welfare of the world.
