About James Oren Thompson

James Oren Thompson (1834–1917) was a versatile American figure who served as a soldier, minister, editor, and government official. Born in Waldo, Maine, his life followed a path of dedicated service that spanned the entire East Coast. He began his professional life as a minister but set aside his pulpit to join the Union Army during the American Civil War. This experience as a veteran informed much of his later work, providing him with a perspective on sacrifice and resilience that characterized his ministry.

After the war, Thompson returned to the ministry and joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He eventually transferred to the Providence, Rhode Island, conference and served faithfully until his retirement in 1886. However, his "retirement" was far from quiet. He moved to Keyser, West Virginia, where he transitioned into journalism as the editor of The Mountain Echo. His diverse skills later led him into public service in Charleston, West Virginia, where he served as the Secretary of Agriculture, demonstrating a deep interest in the civic and industrial health of his community.

Thompson is most widely recognized in the world of hymnody for writing the stirring text "Far and Near the Fields Are Teeming." Written in 1885, the hymn is a classic of the missionary genre, drawing directly on the biblical imagery of the "white harvest" from the Gospels. The song was set to a vigorous melody by J.B.O. Clemm and quickly became a staple in Sunday schools and missionary conventions, emphasizing the urgent need for workers in the spiritual harvest.

In his later years, Thompson sought a warmer climate and moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1905. Even in his seventies, he remained active in the church, serving as the minister at the First Avenue Methodist Church. He passed away in 1917, leaving a legacy as a man of action who believed that faith should be expressed through both the spoken word and practical labor. His hymn continues to be sung as a reminder of the "sheaves" to be gathered and the "Master’s" call to service.
