About Robert Boswell

Robert Boswell (1746–1804) was a Scottish psalmist, biblical scholar, and leader among the Glassite movement, remembered chiefly for his efforts to produce a more accurate metrical version of the Psalms for worship. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1746, Boswell received a strong classical education and became an accomplished Hebrew scholar, enabling him to study the Old Testament in its original language. Professionally, he worked for a time as a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh, a respected legal position in eighteenth-century Scotland, but his greatest influence came through his commitment to biblical scholarship and church life.

Boswell became a follower of John Glas, the Scottish minister whose teachings gave rise to the Glassite (or Glasite) churches. Within the Edinburgh Glassite congregation, Boswell was appointed as the leading elder, a position that reflected both his spiritual maturity and his theological knowledge. The Glassites emphasized a return to New Testament simplicity in church worship and practice, and Boswell shared this desire for faithfulness to Scripture in every aspect of Christian life.

Although Boswell greatly admired the Scottish Metrical Psalter that had long been used in Presbyterian worship, he believed it could be made more faithful to the Hebrew text. Drawing upon his expertise in Hebrew, he published The Psalms in Metre from the Original in 1784, a revised metrical translation intended to improve the accuracy of the existing version while preserving its usefulness for congregational singing. Two years later, in 1786, a second edition appeared under the title The British Psalter, reflecting his continued efforts to provide churches with a translation that more closely represented the inspired text of Scripture.

Boswell remained devoted to preaching and teaching throughout his life. On Sunday, April 1, 1804, while preaching in London, he died suddenly in the pulpit, bringing to a close a life dedicated to the study, proclamation, and singing of God's Word. Though he is less well known than many hymn writers of his era, Robert Boswell occupies an important place in the history of English-speaking psalmody. His commitment to translating the Psalms directly from the Hebrew Scriptures reflected his conviction that the songs of the church should be as faithful as possible to the Word of God, leaving a lasting contribution to the tradition of Reformed worship.
