About S. J. Graham
S. J. Graham was a late 19th-century minister, author, and musical composer. Though precise details regarding Graham's full name, dates of birth and death, and personal life remain historically obscure, their creative output left a lasting footprint on Christian hymnody, particularly within late-nineteenth-century revival movements and Seventh-day Adventist traditions.
Graham's most famous and enduring contribution is the Second Advent hymn, "Gleams of the Golden Morning" (frequently recognized by its first line, "The golden morning is fast approaching"). Both the text and the accompanying melody were composed by Graham and first published in the 1880 hymnal Gates of Praise: for the Sabbath-School, praise service, prayer-meeting, etc. compilation. Characterized by a stirring melody written using only two core harmonizing chords, the piece gained widespread popularity for its fervent anticipation of the Second Coming of Christ. It eventually crossed linguistic borders, finding placement in Spanish hymnals as "Amanece ya la mañana de oro" and Portuguese as "A manhã gloriosa já vem raiando."
Beyond this signature anthem, Graham authored and composed several other gospel works centered on themes of spiritual devotion, harvest, and Christian perseverance. Notable among these are evangelistic and harvest-themed texts such as "Behold the harvest fields are white, gather the harvest in" and "The harvest field's already white." Other recorded pieces include "I've found the road that leads to God" and the comforting "We are marching onward through a vale of tears." Graham's collected works were featured in key turn-of-the-century sacred music publications, including collections printed in major publishing hubs like Battle Creek, Michigan, securing Graham a quiet but permanent legacy in traditional gospel hymnology.
