At the Name of Jesus
Lyrics
Ev'ry knee shall bow,
Ev'ry tongue confess him
King of glory now;
'Tis the Father's pleasure
We should call him Lord,
Who from the beginning
Was the mighty Word.
To receive a name
From the lips of sinners,
Amongst whom he came.
Faithfully he bore it,
Spotless to the last,
Brought it back victorious
When from death he passed.
There let him subdue
All that is not holy,
All that is not true.
Crown him as your Captain,
In temptation's hour;
Let his will enfold you
In its light and pow'r.
Shall return again
With his Father's glory,
With his angel train,
For all wreaths of empire
Meet upon his brow,
And our hearts confess him
King of glory now.

About This Hymn
“At the Name of Jesus” was written by Caroline Maria Noel in 1870 and has become one of the most enduring hymns celebrating the exaltation of Christ. The text is based on Philippians 2:9-11, which declares that God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him a name above every name, so that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Originally written as a processional hymn for Ascension Day, it was published in The Name of Jesus and Other Verses for the Sick and Lonely (1870). Noel composed the hymn later in life while she was largely confined to her home due to illness, yet her words are filled with triumphant praise and theological depth. The hymn unfolds in several stanzas, proclaiming Christ’s eternal divinity, His voluntary humility in coming to earth, His obedience unto death, and His ultimate glorification.
Over time, “At the Name of Jesus” has been set to several tunes, the most well-known being KING’S WESTON by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1925). The hymn is often used in both solemn and celebratory services, especially on feasts that focus on the lordship and kingship of Christ. Its strong doctrinal foundation, poetic beauty, and majestic language have made it a lasting part of Christian worship across denominations.
