Facing a Task Unfinished

By Frank Houghton

Lyrics

1. Facing a task unfinished
that drives us to our knees,
a need that, undiminished,
rebukes our slothful ease,
we who rejoice to know you
renew before your throne
the solemn pledge we owe you
to go and make you known.
2. Where other lords beside you
hold their unhindered sway,
where forces that defied you
defy you still today,
with none to heed their crying
for life and love and light,
unnumbered souls are dying
and pass into the night.
3. We bear the torch that flaming
fell from the hands of those
who gave their lives proclaiming
that Jesus died and rose;
ours is the same commission,
the same glad message ours;
fired by the same ambition,
to you we yield our pow'rs.
4. O Father, who sustained them,
O Spirit, who inspired,
Savior, whose love constrained them
to toil with zeal untired,
from cowardice defend us,
from lethargy awake!
Forth on your errands send us
to labor for your sake.

Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Romans 10:14-15; Isaiah 6:8

About This Hymn

Facing a Task Unfinished is a stirring missionary hymn written by Frank Houghton, former General Secretary of the China Inland Mission, in 1946. The hymn exhorts believers to active participation in the Great Commission, emphasizing urgency, faithfulness, and reliance on God’s power to accomplish His purposes. Its text reflects both Houghton’s personal missionary experience and his deep conviction that the work of God in the world remains incomplete until every people group hears the gospel.

The hymn opens with a vivid acknowledgment that much of the work of evangelism remains undone. Drawing on Matthew 28:18-20, it reminds believers of Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations. Houghton frames the mission not as optional but as an urgent calling that requires dedication, prayer, and sacrificial service. The language conveys both responsibility and hope, inspiring the church to persist despite challenges or opposition.

A key theme is divine empowerment. The hymn recognizes that human effort alone is insufficient to accomplish God’s global purposes. Referencing Acts 1:8, it highlights the promise of the Holy Spirit to equip and guide those who labor for the gospel. Believers are called to step forward in obedience, trusting God for strength, wisdom, and fruitfulness.

The hymn also emphasizes the cost and the joy of participation in God’s work. It encourages perseverance and steadfastness, reminding worshipers that every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to the expansion of God’s kingdom. Houghton’s experience as a missionary in China lends authenticity and urgency to the text, challenging the church to maintain a global perspective and active engagement.

Facing a Task Unfinished continues to be widely used in missionary conferences, sending services, and global outreach events. Its combination of scriptural foundation, pastoral encouragement, and lyrical clarity makes it an enduring call to faithfulness in evangelism, reminding believers that the task of spreading the gospel is urgent, noble, and empowered by God.
