Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains
By J. Macfarlane
Lyrics
Shepherds of old heard the joyous strains:
Glory to God,
Glory to God,
Glory to God in the highest;
Peace on earth, goodwill to men;
Peace on earth, goodwill to men!
Message of mercy from heav’n above:
Help us to sing with the heart and voice:
Men shall unite in the strains sublime:

About This Hymn
Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains” is a cherished Christmas hymn composed by John Menzies Macfarlane in 1869 for a Christmas program in St. George, Utah. Macfarlane, a Scottish-born convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a choir director and civic leader who sought to create a new song for his choir to perform during the holiday season. The hymn was first published in the Juvenile Instructor on December 15, 1889, and has since become a beloved piece in the Latter-day Saint hymnbook, appearing as hymn #212 in the 1985 edition.
The song narrates the angelic announcement of Jesus’ birth to the shepherds in the fields of Judea, echoing the message of peace and goodwill. Its lyrics emphasize the joy and reverence of that holy night, inviting all to join in the heavenly chorus of praise. The melody, also composed by Macfarlane, complements the uplifting message, making it a favorite in Christmas services and celebrations.
