I am Thine, O Lord (Draw Me Nearer)
By Fanny Crosby
Lyrics
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God,
I commune as friend with friend!
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

About This Hymn
Words: Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915)
Music: William H. Doane (1832–1915)
Year: 1875
I Am Thine, O Lord is one of the most cherished hymns of consecration and personal devotion, written by the prolific blind hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby. Composed in 1875, the hymn is a passionate prayer for deeper intimacy with Christ, born out of Crosby’s unwavering devotion to her Savior.
Fanny Crosby, though physically blind from infancy, saw spiritual truths with remarkable clarity. Throughout her life, she penned more than 8,000 hymns, many of which have become staples in Christian worship around the world. She often collaborated with composer William H. Doane, who wrote the tune for this hymn.
The hymn was reportedly inspired by a conversation Crosby had with Doane one evening, where they spoke of the nearness of God and the joy of living in His presence. Later that night, Crosby wrote the poem, and Doane soon set it to music. Its message reflects James 4:8: "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."
The lyrics speak of complete surrender and the longing to be closer to God through prayer, service, and obedience. The refrain—"Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord..."—has echoed in countless hearts as both a personal plea and a corporate call to holiness.
