About J. Macfarlane

John Menzies Macfarlane (1833–1892) was a versatile Scottish-American pioneer, jurist, and musician who played a foundational role in the cultural development of early Utah. Born in Stirling, Scotland, he converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and emigrated to the United States in 1852. His life in the American West was a testament to his adaptability; he served his community in numerous capacities, including as a surveyor, attorney, district judge, and even a farmer. His technical skills were vital to the physical layout of new settlements, while his legal expertise helped establish order in the frontier.

Despite his heavy civic responsibilities, Macfarlane is most celebrated for his contributions to sacred music. He was a gifted teacher and conductor who organized some of the first choirs in the Cedar City and St. George areas. He is best known as the composer of the beloved Christmas carol "Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains." According to tradition, he wrote the hymn in 1869 specifically for a choir program in St. George. Lacking a suitable song for the occasion, he composed both the words and the melody in a single sitting. The carol, with its bright, echoing "Gloria" refrain, became a permanent fixture in holiday celebrations.

Macfarlane’s musical influence extended beyond a single hit. He compiled and published works that were used to train pioneer singers, ensuring that high-quality music was available even in remote desert colonies. His dual identity as a stern judge and a sensitive composer made him a unique figure in Utah history. He was deeply involved in the social fabric of "Dixie" (southern Utah), and his home in St. George was often a hub for musical and intellectual activity.

He passed away in 1892 from complications related to diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was buried in the St. George Cemetery, in the heart of the region he spent his life building. Today, he is remembered not just for the legal precedents he set or the land he surveyed, but for the jubilant melody that continues to be sung every December, bridging the gap between his Scottish roots and his pioneer home.
