Not I, But Christ

By Ada A. Whiddington

Lyrics

1. Not I, but Christ, be honored, loved, exalted;
Not I, but Christ, be seen, be known, be heard;
Not I, but Christ, in every look and action,
Not I, but Christ, in every thought and word.
2. Not I, but Christ, to gently soothe in sorrow,
Not I, but Christ, to wipe the falling tear;
Not I, but Christ, to lift the weary burden,
Not I, but Christ, to hush away all fear.
3. Christ, only Christ! No idle words e’er falling,
Christ, only Christ; no needless bustling sound;
Christ, only Christ, no self important bearing;
Christ, only Christ, no trace of “I” be found.
4. Not I, but Christ, my every need supplying,
Not I, but Christ, my strength and health to be;
Christ, only Christ, for body, soul, and spirit,
Christ, only Christ, here and eternally.

Galatians 2:20; John 3:30; Colossians 3:3-4; Philippians 1:21

About This Hymn

“Not I, But Christ” is a deeply devotional hymn by Ada A. Whiddington that expresses the heart of Christ-centered living through humble surrender and spiritual union with Jesus. Written in the early twentieth century, the hymn reflects a strong emphasis on sanctification and daily discipleship, themes that were prominent in evangelical devotional life during that period. Its language is simple, personal, and prayerful, making it especially suitable for personal reflection, consecration services, and quiet worship.

The central confession of the hymn is drawn directly from Galatians 2:20, where the apostle Paul declares that he no longer lives for himself, but that Christ lives in him. Whiddington builds the entire hymn around this biblical truth, presenting the Christian life as one in which self is progressively displaced so that Christ may be fully seen in thought, word, and deed. The repeated emphasis on “not I” underscores the believer’s dependence on Christ rather than personal strength or merit.

John 3:30 is also clearly reflected in the hymn’s spirit. Like John the Baptist, the believer is called to decrease so that Christ may increase. Whiddington portrays this not as loss, but as spiritual freedom and joy. As Christ becomes central, the burdens of pride, fear, and self-effort are lifted, and the believer finds rest in submission to His will.

Colossians 3:3-4 adds further depth to the hymn’s theology. The believer’s life is hidden with Christ in God, and true identity is found not in outward achievement, but in union with the risen Lord. Whiddington’s hymn encourages believers to view every aspect of life through this lens, whether in service, suffering, or daily obedience.

Philippians 1:21 resonates strongly in the hymn’s closing outlook. To live is Christ, and every moment becomes an opportunity for His life to be expressed through the believer. The hymn does not call for withdrawal from the world, but for Christ to be made visible in the midst of ordinary life.

“Not I, But Christ” remains a powerful hymn of consecration and spiritual maturity. It gently but firmly directs believers away from self-centered religion and toward a life wholly yielded to Christ, reminding the church that true holiness and fruitfulness flow only from abiding in Him.
