Lord, Let Us Now Depart in Peace

About This Hymn
This traditional hymn is rooted in the ancient words of the Nunc Dimittis, the prayer of Simeon recorded in Luke chapter two. After seeing the infant Jesus in the temple, Simeon lifted his voice in calm assurance, declaring that he could now depart in peace since the Lord had fulfilled His promise and revealed the long awaited salvation. The hymn carries that same spirit of trust, gratitude, and quiet confidence. It is often sung during evening worship or at the close of a service, since it expresses the believer's desire to leave the gathered assembly under God's care, with hearts settled in the knowledge of His faithfulness.
The hymn invites worshipers to rest in the promise that God has shown the true Light to the world through His Son. It reminds the congregation that the salvation promised to Israel has become a gift for all nations. Because of this, the believer can face the end of the day with confidence, knowing that the grace of God has appeared in Jesus Christ and has brought peace to every heart that trusts in Him. The gentle wording and simple structure make it suitable for both public worship and private devotion, especially at night when the mind turns toward reflection and the need for divine protection. Through its scriptural depth and quiet beauty, the hymn continues to guide generations of Christians to rest in the Lord who keeps His promises and grants peace to all who look to Him.
